A tribute to Pierre

PBlastPierre Babin is no longer with us. The Founder of CREC and pioneer of the "Symbolic Way" died on 9th May 2012. He goes to the Christ that he strived to bring to all.

This photo is perhaps the last one taken before Pierre completely retired.  As you may already know, Pierre spent the last part of his active life for more than a year in Thailand, trying to write a book on Living Life to the Fullest.  He could only finished the Table of Contents. It took him a long time trying to get the first chapter done. His Alzheimer worsened by days and he could not continue any longer.  The picture was taken at a private beach in Pattaya one evening. He spent almost an hour watching the sunset at the horizon (probably revisiting his entire life).  Late that night, Pierre told me it's time for him to return to Lyon for a complete retirement.

Chainarong

Dear Chai,

That is a wonderful picture and in one way it aptly reflects the person Pierre was -  a prophetic dreamer. He told me once that we need to go beyond words. For him words restrict as we need to vibrate with the total environment which we are all part of.

But he loved poetry and art and  poets and artists. He said they are the people closest to the truth as they walk a fine line between reality and fantasy between sanity and insanity. He was excited when I showed him the slide show on the life of Kim Chi Ha, a Korean poet who was at that time imprisoned in Korea. The poems of Kim moved him very much.

It will be important to re-visit, learn and reflect on Pierre a man ahead of his time.

How many of you have a mobile phone?

I knew it was a stupid question as soon as I asked it:
"How many of you have a mobile phone?"
I started counting and gave up. Every hand in the room was in the air.
Several students wanted to know if I meant one mobile phone or two.
I already knew the answer to my second stupid question:
"How many of you are on Facebook?"
This time I didn't even try counting.

Session in Liberia

It’s true that we arrived right in the middle of a violently-contested national election, but the presence of white United Nations vehicles and international observers, was overwhelming. Tangible signs of two devastating civil wars that ended not so long ago, leaving nearly 10% of the population dead, were everywhere: armless and legless war-wounded on their rickety, home-made wheelchairs, charred and abandoned buildings risking collapse. Apparently, the only structures that were not bombed during the fighting were the Coca Cola factory and the national brewery.

Session in Ethiopia

Sean Patrick Lovett and Rev. Abba Beyene Hailu, both members of the CREC international trainers' team, went last year to Adigrat, in Ethiopia, in order to conduct a course on communications. The course was followed by formators, professors and seminarians of the Major Seminary. Other participants came from the Adigrat Eparchy, from the Salesians of Don Bosco, the Sisters of St. Lucy Filippini, Ursoline and Daughters of Charity. The bishop himself attended the session. A second session took place this year, from 13 till 19 February 2011.

General Assembly

The 2010 General Assembly of CREC took place in Lyon on November 26 and 27. A large number of items were on the agenda: calendar of sessions in 2011, university credits for the sessions given in Africa, collaboration with a training and production centre to be created in Mauritius, production of online courses, videoconferences with the University in Ottawa and the NISCORT Institute, in India, with the rector of the seminary in Koumi, Burkina Faso; with the director of Radio Veritas, in Johannesburg. The 2011 General Assembly will take place in Lyon, on March 25.
